MATERNAL MORTALITY: REVISITED
It's no question we are in a crisis of epic proportions. You would have to be hiding under a rock to be unaware of the lives oftentimes senselessly lost from something as commonplace as pregnancy and childbirth. Even the postpartum period which is classically held as a special time for families can sadly serve as a catalyst to the loss of a life.
Much of years past, the discussion has been increasingly focused on infant mortality. While much of this is valid given the growth still required in rural communities, for example, we as a culture should begin to move the scope of focus onto the the birthing person; like never before. California has aggressively dropped their maternal mortality rates with innovations, intuitive design and complex programming. Please know, NOVA Birth Partners is actively at the forefront of these issues and working hard to implement solutions on the ground level.
Imagine going into your birth with confidence and assurance. You and your partner can feel at peace knowing you are well prepared. What if you don't know how to prepare? What if you lack exposure to the resources aimed to facilitate healthier, safer outcomes? Maternal morbidity & mortality in plain language = families at risk for failure to thrive and live meaningfully in good health mentally, socially, psychologically in addition to physically thereafter. It does not affect simply the birthing person. It can leave detrimental effects on the entire community.
We are championing in implementing new programs already well established in our community to ensure access to comprehensive, evidence based birth and postpartum support --- regardless of the ability to pay. Our mission and vision for our organization revolves around the basics... people first. With a huge focus on health disparities in the black community, we are committed to ending health inequities in this realm through excellent research and statistical tracking, the dissemination of resources and information, and through the pursuit of collaboration with local community, state and federal authorities.
