Understanding Doula Services Using an Employer Benefit & Insurance
We are here to help! We have a coalition of certified birth & postpartum providers at your fingertips. Here at NOVA Birth Partners, we know that doulas are essential support people during and after childbirth. When clients reach out to us for assistance, we are realizing that many have never heard of an Insurance Employer Benefit. They do not know or expect to receive reimbursement support through an employer or that much needed doula services can be covered or reimbursed by insurance. We have had many families receive reimbursement from insurance or employer benefit programs for services to date. Insurance or employer benefit programs can reimburse both the birth and postpartum doula services we provide. Our Certified Doulas help families all over the country. We can help you receive the nighttime or daytime postpartum doula care your family needs most wherever you live. We have several doulas that have offered services covered by programs such as Carrot® . *NOVA Birth Partners has no implied affiliation with Carrot®
Insurances and Employers that offer a Fertility Benefit are going above and beyond to recognize the overwhelming importance that quality doula services can provide. They not only understand the importance and benefits of exceptional doula support, they have made it possible for many families that otherwise could not afford the help to now receive it. We are committed to being a part of the change for increasing accessibility to these services. See the NOVA Birth Partners difference in care when choosing who to serve your family.
How To Take Advantage of Insurance or Employer Benefit Programs:
Benefits & Maternity Coverage
Eligibility for Certified and Insurance-approved doula services requires the family to use a doula with possibly some of the following qualifications in order to be approved for consideration for reimbursement. To be eligible for doula reimbursement through most insurance companies and employer benefit programs, you must have an active policy and you must use an approved, certified doula that meets specified qualifications.
CERTIFICATION Doulas need to hold a current and valid certificate. Some commonly used certification programs include (but are not limited to):
BirthWorks International, CAPPA: Childbirth and Postpartum Professional Association, ToLabor, DONA International or ICEA: International Childbirth Education Association
If you qualify to receive an insurance or employer-covered benefit, it is best to contact your employer to find out what your reimbursement employee benefit specifics are in detail. Actual benefits vary from employer to employer. Every employer can pick and choose their desired health plan and related benefits for their staff. Certified Doula coverage by may include 6 weeks of daytime and overnight doula care from birth, in addition to prenatal and birth support, but it does vary from company to company, business to business. We have some insurance companies that have reimbursed for postpartum support within the first calendar year.
Depending on your employer’s plan you will either need to request a “superbill” or itemized receipt approved, certified doula that includes a detailed payment invoice showing the price and services included. You would then submit this to for reimbursement. Other plans include a “Carrot Card®”, commonly used like an Health Savings Account (HSA) or Federal Savings Account (FSA) card that you can use to pay for your certified doula services directly. You will likely still need to seek approval following whatever guidelines are provided by the vendor specifically.
